We would alienate our allies, encourage our enemies and make new enemies.

I know I would be pissed if the U.S. didn't take forceful action. Hell Canada might actually have to put together their own defense budget instead of piggy backing on the U.S.<ggg> The U.S. has been a good neighbour to Canada, a very good neighbour. How else could we afford free universal healthcare. Yikes!

I pray nobody in the world discovers that Canada actually has something worth taking. I'm surprised we haven't been invaded by the Americans.<ggg>

>Responding to an act of war by attacking the perpetrators is not continuing a cycle of violence, we have not been part of a cycle, we were the victims of a "bolt out of the blue" attack.

Well, we must understand the viewpoint of the enemy. The enemy here believes that they have been the victims of the US foreign policy for decades, not years. So, to them, it is not a "bolt out of the blue" attack, it is retaliation due to the continued support of the Israeli govt which has been conducting war (in other words, state sponsored terrorism) for decades.

>The attack was done from hatred but also from an attempt to scare the US.

Yes, the attack was done from hatred but desperation too. We have driven these people to desperation whether we like to admit it or not. Besides, those people who managed to pull of this operation succeeded to scare the crap out of us ( I admit I am scared, I have a flight in 9 days, I am thinking about staying home).

>Osama would not give up his war against the US if there was a settlement in Israel.

Maybe, maybe not. I bet you that most of his followers will say to him "fine Osama dude, while it is nice to have virgins in heaven by blowing myself up, let me get back to my family and try to get some before I depart to heaven, lay it off buddy". As long as there is no settlement in Israel I guarantee you most will stay with him, I mean what is there to go back for?

>You also advocated that the US should support the Serbs. This would create a new group that is against the US.

Hey, the Serbs are already against us after the devastation we caused to their beautiful country!

>And those who might have supported us in a fight with terrorism will see us as week and unreliable. We would alienate our allies, encourage our enemies and make new enemies.

I don't give a sh*t if we alienate our allies (besides, I think we have done a pretty good job of alienating almost every nation in this planet already), encourage our enemies (I do not see how they can be encouraged if we lay off of our violent ways and play honest broker for change) and make new enemies (the new enemies will be a minimal number in comparison, it will be much easier to keep a lid on them than the situation now with so many willing suicide bombers) as long as my family and all my fellow American citizens can leave in peace and security without even thinking of that plane overhead maybe falling on their heads...hey it's called freedom. Maybe my way is better, maybe your is. I guess we'll see...
