I have to feel sorry for anyone raised in such a way that they are willing to throw their life away and kill thousands of people for some idea. I have never thought any idea was worth blood. Self protection, possibly self protection generalized to the state- but self defense is sort of a primal reaction, and not really and idea. No organism wants to die, normally. So I have to think something strange and horrible has happened to people who being to see death as the solution. As a good thing. I have compassion for them, but I do not forgive them. And I want to punish them. Compassion is not the same as forgiveness. I have compassion for many, many, people I will never ever forgive. I am not a forgiving person. I hope we don't react as they wish either. Of course we need to know who "they" are. So far everyone is disclaiming responsibility for this- or that is what I heard on the radio. Maybe there is new news.

Thames, There are two ways to steer a motorcycle. In the most dangerous case of having to veer from an obstacle, the intuitive way is the wrong way. The non-intuitive way of reacting to this terror attack is to wait until all the data is in. This wasn't planned last night. There is no reason we have to act by tomorrow night. I feel uncomfortable with prosecuting any "host nation" until we have all the data and very specific targets identified. We also have to have a clear mission and seek to minimize collateral damage to civilian populations. If it is better to take out those targets covertly, so be it. The problem with this type of act of violence is there is no one left afterwards to prosecute. The President virtually disappeared for 8 hours and his address was very uninformative, IMO. If you simply target Afghanistanis, but not Bin Laden specifically, then you are doing what they did and likely to start an escalation. I wouldn't want to see us lash out for easy target because the lack of precision will not "send a message" but increase the likelihood of more violence. As you said, we didn't think it was okay for the U.K. to bomb Ireland because of terrorism in London.
