Thanx Scott.
I recently read, and will be writing an essay on, a marvelous book called "Humanity" by Jonathan Glover. Earlier this year it got a much deserved rave in the NY Times Book Review. It is a look at the atrocities of this century.

I conclude that nobody is exempt, and every victim is innocent. Civilians have been killed in every war and in every terrorist act. We perpetuate the in"humanity" by categorizing the other side as "vermin" and "evil" and "cowards". It allows the thing to accelerate. These situations need to be defused. As a commentator on CNN was saying tonight, we do not have many friends in the mideast right now. The countries had all expressed their anger very directly to Bush at our position. Ppolitics is about negotiating to achieve the best (and always compromised) situation in a real world where war, terrorism, and conflicts of interest are the rule.

I am horrified. But humanity has a long such history. And I do not think an eye for an eye is the answer.
