Circumstantially, the Kennedy "market blip" isn't comparable. The '63 market was having a great year, anyway — up some 19%. Fed rates were already exceptionally low, government spending was quickly accelerating. The outlook for the following year was bright (and it was — economic growth exceeded inflation about 7x). November '63 sheds little hope as to what's happening currently.

Who's panicing? I've been largely out of the market for over a year now because I've been expecting a severe downturn, albeit not for these reasons.

I'm holding about 50% cash right now and I intend to keep it that way until the future is clearer. Any number of things can happen now to sink the markets further and Bink has only listed a few of the problems.

Among other concerns are, the potential for future and more deadly attacks, including the use of biological weapons. Whether you want to believe it or not, the potential is very much out there. This isn't a sci fi flick and "they" have just proven that they CAN reach out and touch us. Most infectious agents that offer biological weapon potential would be much easier to smuggle in than it is to hijack a plane.

An escalation of any military action by us into another world war.

The very real possibility that this situation could jeopardize our oil supply and make oil at best very expensive or at worst hard to obtain.

Shall I go on? Even a relatively simple minded individual can see how this thing could get much much worse. It's not about being "patriotic". Since when is going broke patriotic?

Let the smoke clear first, then buy if everything seems ok. That could take months.
