WELLINGTON (CBS.MW) -- Stocks in New Zealand plunged Wednesday, becoming the first of the Asian-Pacific markets to open down since terrorists launched attacks on the United States. Kuala Lumpur has shut its markets until further notice, but other Asian markets are scheduled to open at their regular time.

New Zealand's Top 40 Index tumbled 110.61 points, or 5.63 percent, to 1,854.09 -- the biggest percentage drop since October 1997.
