Religion is not the problem. Fanaticism is.

How very true.....and sometimes that's only part of the story. A couple of weeks ago I read where the Israeli intercepted a 22 year old Palestinian who was planning to blow up a Haifa club. It turns out the guy had lost his job and could not support his mother and father. He felt useless and depressed. The act of blowing up an Israeli dance club was to him an act of courage and a form of redemption for his inability to provide adequately for his parents.

The Palestinian leaders use young guys in their late teens/early twenties in this way. The older leaders hide behind their wives and children and pump up younger guys to do their dirty work.....and that's where a lot of the Palestinian fanaticism lies...in the highly manipulative mindset of a twenty year old.

The Fanatic's excuse can take many forms, one of which is religious fundamentalism. There are certainly many others, however… "Captitalism", "globalism", even "freedom" (one example of the latter would be the many US "militias" who fight for their "freedom" against the federal government) have all been invoked as the excuse du jour.

Another excuse is that they were high on drugs. Japanese kamikaze pilots were given a drug...I think it was a kind of ecstasy.....that caused the pilots feel invulnerable and committed. So maybe they and the current terrorists were/are not really as suicidal as we think.
