Sun Tzu's Art of War says you can't go in brutally, because you may create a worse problem than there was when you originally went in.
One of his 4 premises of war is summarized as "win the hearts and minds of the people". the down side of going about this aimlessly (or brutally as you say) is it creates terrorists. I read that bin Laden's terrorist camps have trained upwards of 5,000, these are sad (angry) folk who Bin Laden screens to see if they are worth training he doesn't have to recrute them they come to him and his leutenants and sycophants. It's a mistake to create more (angry people). For every civilian causulty in Middle East that might result from a retailatory attack they are likely to have a young male relative with no future who will find a cause in hating the USA or the freedom we represent.
Those children dancing and cheering about innocent civilian deaths... How can this be corrected?
Recall during the hostage crisis in Iran that those who burned the flag and rallied in fromnt of the cameras did not represent the masses. In Nazi Germany the brown shirts weren't the problem it was the leadership who brainwashed them. The German people of the 30's were vulnerable due to economic problems they didn't understand. Hitler gave the enemy a face (that of Jewish business), blaming the Jew for the economic difficulties.
Same thing now in Middle East. Irresponsible populist leaders paint a face on their problem and idenitify it as the enemy. For the Palastinain its Israel/USA.
The solution.......I'd take out the leadership, with stealth and quiet. One by one until would be terrorist leaders are afraid to take credit for their deeds. If they don't have a public platform from which to rally the less fortunate they fad away into obscurity.
Is this viable for the Western World?
It would take the cooperation of the leaders of the world to go along.
