Devastation in America: Terror overwhelms telecom networks
Yesterday’s appalling terrorist attacks on New York City and Washington
D.C. left voice networks overwhelmed, but Internet performance held up
well. At least two major carriers lost infrastructure in the attacks: a 50,000
line Verizon switch servicing the World Trade Center was destroyed, while a
Sprint 75,000 line long-distance switch housed in the basement of one of
the twin towers was also destroyed. Verizon said it also lost ten cdmaOne
base stations in the Manhattan area, while AT&T issued an advisory saying
its network was intact. At one point, AT&T was carrying nearly one million
calls a minute.
