Yeah, it's easy with hindsight to criticize the US for backing the Mujahedeen during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. But but consider--Afghanistan was accounting for 15 million refugees. Besides the largest human exodus in history, a million Afghans died in the occupation. Poison gas and chemical warfare were used against the Afghans. Boobytrapped toys were sprinkled from helicopters over remote villages. Critical irrigation works were shelled, destroying the country's ability to feed itself. Bin Laden's a scumbag, but given the carnage in Afghanistan 15 years ago, I still back the US policy.
