if you care to think about a group which has borne a dispropotionate loss and all in an effort to aid others focus on the hundreds of police and firefighters who died yesterday. their families are truly in special need today.

John and Thread, Salomon Brothers and Credit Suisse First Boston employees appear to be okay (i.e. they weren't in the two World Trade Center twin buildings that collapsed), but Morgan Stanley employees were located in the twin buildings, though there are reports that some folks on the 70th and 82nd floors got out okay.

My friend works at CSFB, so he should be okay. One friend's brother (who I don't know) is an analyst at Morgan Stanley (not in the semi biz). Not sure on his status.

Message from Morgan Stanley Chairman Philip Purcell:
We are all saddened and outraged by the attack on America today, and extend our deepest sympathies and prayers to all the people affected.

As you have seen in media reports, two towers of the World Trade Center have collapsed after a series of explosions.

We have limited information about the Trade Center disaster beyond what has been reported in the news. Our key focus and concern are for the well-being and safety of Morgan Stanley employees. Some 3,500 people working for Morgan Stanley's individual investor businesses were based in the World Trade Center complex. We are working diligently with local authorities, and we will keep you apprised of developments. A call center has been established for employee-related safety concerns at 888-883-4391.

A Message on the World Trade Center tragedy from John J. Mack, CEO of Credit Suisse First Boston

I would like to express my deepest sorrow and offer concern to anyone who has been touched by today’s terrible events. We know that colleagues and clients and their families and friends have been deeply affected by today’s attack on the World Trade Center.

CSFB had operations at 5 World Trade Center, adjacent to the collapsed twin towers. As we learn more information from emergency services, we will post updates about the situation.

For our employees, we have established a 24-hour hotline that may also be used by family and friends to get information and Firm-wide announcements resulting from the tragedy:

Donald Burns, 34, was evacuated from a meeting on the 82nd floor of One World Trade Center

American Express employee Jennifer Griffin was in the subway en route to her office at the World Financial Center, next to the towers, when it was announced the train wouldn't be stopping at the World Trade Center. foxnews.com

Boris Ozersky, 47, computer networks analyst, was on the 70th floor of one of the towers when he felt something like an explosion rock it. He raced down 70 flights of stairs and burst outside, in a mob in front of a nearby hotel.

"About eight hours later the 47-story Salomon Brothers Building at 7 World Trade Center, another structure in the financial district complex, also caught fire and crumbled about 5 p.m."

(Note: in another article, it said building 7 was evacuated before it collapsed.)
