I think we mourn for the entire human race for our loss. I think we will realize that we have experienced another Pearl Harbor, not only as a nation but as a member of an aspect of civilization called democracy. This brings us much closer to those peoples that have been subjected to terrorism for years and even centuries. As an aside, I think it is natural for us to discuss this on the GRNO thread. I feel we all need to call our families and friends and just talk. I don't go to the political threads and so don't know those people there. If anything the GRNO people at least have something in common with me. I think the human species has made great progress in the preceding few centuries. For example, in the 20th, we have defeated monarchism, fascism and communism and have made huge advances against racism and other forms of bigotry. But I feel those were just skirmishes in the war we have just begun. I feel we are now engaged in a great war of democracies versus all the rest of the various versions of human oppression. I think I am now far more aligned with the Israeli people who are at least part of a democratic state compared to the Arab states that surround their immediate location such as monarchies and dictatorships. Even though most of the Islamic states that condemn Israel are moderate in approach, they are not democratic. Even though the Israeli approach to terrorism has been heavy handed, I now tend to believe we must cooperate more proactively with the Israeli government. We can't simply watch and criticize. We must reach out and do whatever it takes to educate the subjects of those regimes, despite the efforts to scramble our message. As examples of what we could tell them, look at the north American continent. There is now a big political issue of Mexicans invading the US just to work. They like America, this is not a hostile invasion. Why isn't there a problem with illegal aliens from Canada causing a similar issue? Because the standard of living in Canada is similar to ours, not because of their "race". And why is their standard of living similar to ours? Because Canada is a democracy like ours. Their legal system isn't thoroughly corrupt after 70 years of "one party" rule. But there is hope for Mexico. The election of Vicente Fox may be a sea change in the Mexican political and legal systems. Or not. I think the reason the Palestinian Authority was not willing to follow through with the Peace Process was that they are thoroughly corrupt, typical of "third world" autocratic regimes. I also realize that democracy is not the final solution. The people of Northern Ireland who have subjected to a malignant history for centuries are an example of how democracy must overcome past evil. Our own experience with integration was similar their current situation. Sometimes government force is needed to provide the excuse people need to just get along. I agree we must go on and we cannot allow our grief to mitigate our resolve. Life must go on and our struggle now commences.
