Another point...there is nothing unpatriotic about being short. It is a function of the markets and a tool of the trade. People have shorted before this event and they will short after. It is irrelevant to what has happened. If anything shorts help provide a floor to the market due to the necessity to buy and cover to close positions. With no buyers in a falling market, there is no floor as everyone scrambles to to sell at the best possible price which is constantly driven lower.

While there are many stocks and sectors which will get hit hard once the market opens, some will also gain, most notably defence and oil stocks. Are we to short these stocks because it would be "unpatriotic" to go long since their rise can directly be attributed to the terrorist act that has killed thousands?

America is great and we will move on, though with pains in our hearts. Millions make their livelyhood in this country in the financial system and part of keeping this country going is making money. Long AND short.

I was not criticizing those who've shorted in the past, merely those who dare do it once markets re-open adding pressure to what will be a difficult process of recovery. Remember most people have their retirement money in stocks. America itself is threatened by anyone who makes himself a parasite. After Pearl Harbor citizens bought war bonds even if they couldn't afford to. They scrapped and saved and pitched in. Shorting now going forwrd is unpatriotic. Some will try it. We should not condone this.
