Unfortunately I suspect the people who did this actually want the US to respond massively. They are anything but stupid and undoubtedly are expecting a big US attack. Then there is the potential for escalation and the overthrow of pro-US governments in the Middle East. That in turn could trigger a global depression if oil prices were to go to say $100.

Just one possible scenario. Improbable but not impossible.

<ot>Hi SbH - I [and my guess most people here] certainly agree that targeted response is inevitable --- or even a moral imperative, if you will.

Maybe that is why some groups like DFLP and the Taliban have made a disclaimer hoping to avoid the world's fury. Tragedies like this bring the hero in people to the surface. People like Bill certainly deserve a heartfelt note of thank you. So, the Phoenix will rise from the rubble! I am certain about that. Strangely, I think there will be fewer terrorist activities in the near future. To say the least, those cells who are not related to this attack probably don't want to take the blunt of it. And the perpetrator(s) probably tries to lie low. However, I think this may be the time to make sustained efforts to get rid of terrorism. Instead of playing games at the UN, maybe member nations can do something about this. If they can bring grievance parties to the table, by all means. If not, and the grievance parties choose to use innocent people to vent their anger, they should be dealt with in such severity that they have no means of revival. I know, this is idealistic talk here!

Strangely, I suspect that this tragedy will bring about the renewal, spiritually and materially. Who knows, maybe renewal has already begun.

best, Bosco
