They (high tech solutions) save American lives. Why are you offended by that? I am not the least offended by high tech. I am offended by stupid uses of high tech, by Maginot Line thinking. I am hardly the first to point out that the US defense industry has often been more interested in weapons that will produce big profits for them than weapons that will work on the battlefield. We need to do both. With due respect, the Bush administration has not proposed doing both. The Bush administration has been fixated on tax cuts and missile defense to the detriment of almost everything else. After saying "help is on the way" to the military all last year, they proposed a military budget with almost no increase and none of Rumsfields redesigns (which will require additional monies). And why? Because of the tax cut and missile defense. Though this may change now. I hope so.
