"Hardening the targets" has limited value.
The WTC had elaborate security for everyone entering the building. The hijacked planes did not check in through the lobby security system. If you put armed guards on the planes and bullet proof dividers to protect the plane cockpits, then terrorists will find another way. No matter how much you do to defend particular targets, they will find a way around them. So that leaves getting them at the source. I presume that NSA has satellite images and cell phone intercepts. Whatever legal restrictions may have existed before against taking direct action against terrorists would now be lifted.

I wonder if the perpetrators are in touch with reality enough to appreciate what likely lies ahead?
