I would say the opposite and therein lies the debate. The notion that gold is just another "commodity" is the simplistic argument. In fact it is more so money than almost all the "currencies" you can name. And we shall soon see in regards the USD.

I can't think of too many (none, in fact) other "commodities" that have universally stood the test of time the way gold has, or that has affected the course of human events the way gold has. Just because some government official has declared gold not to be money in his eyes, does not make it so, regardless of how much he might manipulate it. In fact, the more he manipulates it, the more that gold's value as money is enhanced in the end.
