NG:Seems to me that the spokesperson, 2000 years ago, for the Christian religion was exceedingly tolerant.

Actually, I would call that point in time the dawn of the modern era in religion. Jesus' "turn the other cheek" teaching was unprecedented (of course adherence to this canon is still quite difficult in practice - we're not likely to offer up the terrorists another building to destroy). "Modern" may not have been the best term, but 2000 years is not much time when considered relative to the dawn of man and early paganism.

By including (religious) in the foregoing statement, the statement becomes nothing more than a "racist" type statement perhaps more reflecting of one's own hangups than reflecting any reality based statement.

You respond as if I said ALL religious tenets. I specifically said "IMPROBABLE religious tenets". Moreover, I did not denigrate in any way (as a "racist" would) those who might put faith in those beliefs. My intent was to rationally explain how some people of faith can be compelled to perform despicable acts. I certainly didn't mean to imply a Niceguy like you would do such a thing. ;)

This reminds me tho, of those recent stories out of Poland where seemingly normal, everyday people willingly participated in the torture and murder of Jewish men, women, and children at the start of WWII. Are any of us really immune to committing an atrocity when placed in terrible circumstances?

In that context, it should not be surprising that I've heard reports now of Arab Americans receiving death threats.
