No one knows the answer to it. They did what they thought was best at the time, using the information they had about everything.

I saw a show myself that interviewed a lot of the Veterans, and they all said, they sure were glad the bomb was dropped, and they all felt that it saved American lives.
Saving Japanese lives was not our priority at the time, nor should it have been.
They started the war, and it was our leaders duty and obligation to Americans to insure that we did whatever it took to minimize the loss and injury to OUR boys, not theirs.
