Jean,

I hope that some enterprising journalist or writer will do a piece on the involvement of the US government in the Afghanistan conflict in the late 1970's and early 1980's....the Carter and Reagan administrations both sent numerous weapons and other help to the Afghan anti-soviet forces. These forces seemed to be the good guys to some who thought that the enemy of our enemy was our friend. The repercussions from our involvement has apparently resulted in unforeseen complications...a lot of these "friends" were extremist (fundalmentalist) groups who have proved to be a little wackier than we expected. The roots of this mess are very complicated and convoluted.

I'm planning to do some reading and see if I can get a better understanding of who did what and what led to what. If you or anybody else comes across any sites or books that might put some historical perspective on this goofiness, please post what you find.

I found an article in the washington post on our good friends the Taliban , and their trafficking in opium
Message 16110915

unfortunately the links don't work for those
Washington Post articles , but they were dealing with
a specific problem Iran has with their increasing
drug addiction , with all that stuff coming down thru
their country from the Afghan boyz to
the north.

You stop the flow of opium , you cripple the country
of Afghanistan...but the Mullahs won't be
the one's starving.
