Brian:" The military is an anachronism; ", unfortunately, at this point in time of "human events", "speak softly and carry a big stick", still "works".

>>So do we counter with what would be an equally(or greater) act of barbarity, stupidity, and viscousness? I am not sure I follow this line of reasoning<<

Brian, every one of my posts made it clear that we shouldn't kill innocent people. In fact, I don't remember anyone on this thread asking for the destruction of Afganistan--which I did see on other threads.

But to me, crime is related to opportunity and not reacting to those responsible would provide an opportunity.

I take no joy in this whatsoever.

<<The military is an anachronism; hopefully one day not too long from now I will not be virtually alone in saying this.
>>

a·nach·ro·nism [ nákr nìzzm ] (plural a·nach·ro·nisms) noun

1. chronological mistake: something from a different period of time, for example, a modern idea or invention wrongly placed in a historical setting in fiction or drama

2. something out of time: a person, thing, idea, or custom that seems to belong to a different time in history

3. making of chronological mistake: the representation of somebody or something out of chronological order or in the wrong historical setting

[Mid-17th century. Via French anachronisme from, ultimately, late Greek anakhronizesthai , literally "to be timed backward," from khronos "time."]

Perhaps the reason you are alone, Brian, is because you are wrong. Our enemy understands violence and death. It is their primary weapon and the only language they speak.

We have two disadvantages to overcome:

1) We don't act but must react to terrorism.

2) We care about the collateral damage.

We have one advantage:

1) We carry the biggest stick.

Despite my military background or perhaps because of it, I would be delighted if the military were to really become an anachronism because the world learned to live together. Unfortunately we aren't even close. Until that day we better concentrate on maintaining the advantage because the disadvantages are a given.

Brian,
You are ahead of your time, way ahead. When your family is attacked as mine was yesterday, you must fight back. Yes, innocents will be hurt. Their governments should not support terrorists. If we dont react, it will happen again and again. Philosphically i am with you my friend, but the Afgans need to turn those bastards over to us or at least give their positions up so we can destroy them. Otherwise they will face destruction too. There call, not ours. When it happens I will not lose sleep. I lost much sleep yesterday and I have cried several times today. I will not lose sleep over them. Mike

> The military is an anachronism

History seems to indicate that misgovernment, not war, as the leading course of human deaths since in modern time. Wars, and the threat of wars, seem to be the only effective mechanism to curb misgovernment.
