And for how long would this occupation run? Forever? You would only spawn generations of freedom fighters. Even if the war did not spread, which is unlikely, how in the name of heaven would you control a country that f*cking large with that many people? It's just not practical. How many years and how many dead Americans would be enough? Afghanistan is surrounded by Muslim countries and pseudo-states to the North. After some time, assuming you could get any support for such an extreme idea, your allies would fall off. No way the French, or even the British and Canadians, are going to stay at it for years. The other problem would be that the conflict would very likely spread and now you are at war on half the sub-continent and God knows how much of the Middle East. This is not Pearl Harbor. The enemy has no country. He lives throughout the world and is legion.

They bombed and occupied and died by the thousands and in the end they failed, even though they could move troops in and out at will and controlled plenty of airports and bases in or over the border with Afghanistan. You are proposing another Vietnam.
