That is too broad of a statement. I have been a practicing agnostic for a long time, and I live in what has been described as "the Buckle on the Bible Belt". Around here, I can guarantee you that the numbers given in that study are on the low side. Despite that, I have never been excluded because I don't practice their religion. Pressured to go to church with them, yes.

As far as the South being the bastion of white racism, you don't get around much in the US, do you? Where were most of the riots over integration during the '60s and the '70s? Hint: it wasn't south of the Mason Dixon line...
