Good observation, what we have is a perversion of a belief system into a fundamentalist fanaticism, the same process that created the Crusades, Stalin, Hitler, and Hirohito. The only difference is that today these varmin have access to the latest technology, which they turn against us, whether it is military technology or civilian, as in the case of airliners. I don't think we can afford to sit back and wait for the next escalation in terrorism, whether it be biological, chemical, or nuclear. I think we have to hit them with whatever maximizes the probability of long-term success.

Up until the time of Hitler, close combat, massive invasions, and protracted battles were the way to conduct warfare, but not now. Vietnam showed the limits of that type of warfare in the modern era. Desert Storm showed that smart conventional weapons can do the job, but only with a well-defined enemy within a concentrated area. With a dispersed, faceless enemy spread all over the world, it's time to consider the nuclear option. Even in Japan, we went nuclear, though protected by being the only nuclear power, and in the end created a democracy and saved a lot of lives. I think it's time to consider going after the worldwide terrorist camps with a combination of smart weapons and small tactical nukes. We can make the nukes clean enough to avoid as much collateral damage as possible. There will be some collateral damage, but not nearly as much as the tremendous death toll in NY.

How long will the Taliban refuse to turn over bin Laden with tactical nukes going off in suspected terrorist areas? And, while we're about it, let's make a clean sweep -- go after Saddam's "presidential palaces" that are really NBC weapon hideouts. Go after terrorist camps in Pakistan. Will there be an outcry? Yep. Will the Moslem radicals yell and scream? Yep. But we will rid the world of 90% of this cancer, and make those who harbor these criminals understand that there will be massive consequences. It will re-establish deterrence in the post-cold war era. It will solve the organized terrorism problem for ourselves, our children, and our grandchildren. Maybe in 200 years we will have to come up with a different solution.
