I agree about looking for reasons, differences in world views, and acceptable means to ends. Many reasons I hear do not ring substantive to me. Most remind me of stupid statements like, "she was probably asking for it." Some Chinese said we should expect such events since we attempt to "police the world" and are powerful. What conclusions should we take from this assessment? The worst atrocity I am aware of is the genocide of 30 million Chinese by the new Communist Chinese regime when Mao (feel free to correct here) took over. The Holocaust pales, no offense intended, and for purely political reasons. Those 30 million might have benefited from a little "policing," but none was to come to their aid. I have little hope right now in understanding our way to a prevention of terrorist behavior. I think we know a lot about why this happened, especially if it is inspired by fundamentalist Muslims. They are justified and the martyrs are in heaven. We are going to become a society which gives up an easy-going, life is beautiful approach to security in certain areas. We are going to protect ourselves better, which terrorists will understand and appreciate. One thing I appreciate about the notion of separation of church and state is that it prevents religion from being associated with such wide-scale stupidity, thereby saving God the embarrassment of being represented as being so stupid. At least our government must take responsibility for its various blunders, along with us as citizens, and not give some God the credit for our ignorance and inhumanity.
