They are probably expecting a response, a "measured" / "surgical" / "targeted" / "limited" variety favored by the two previous Presidents and Congresses alike.

Going completely non-linear on them (which is the only way to go -- why allow them to decide the "acceptable" trade-offs of destruction?), with the aim of wiping entire peoples / nations / land masses off the face of the Earth forever, is not in their plans.

But the rhetoric in Washington suggests that a completely disproportionate response may be in ours. "Act of war" and "guilt by previous action" are phrases we haven't heard out of Congress or Administration officials in my memory. Listen for the *lack* of talk of "deterrence effect" and so on.

As far as the idea of "innocent children" in the terrorist countries is concerned, let's just put that one to rest. The values that a Palestinian six-year-old learns from his culture are kidnapping, violence directed against civilians instead of against the military, murder as an express ride to heaven, and so on.
