China Unicom posts 30% rise in net profit in first half.

China Unicom had 20.2 million mobile users as of the end of June, up from 8.3 million a year ago and higher than 12.77 million as of the end of December. Among the new additions in the first half, some 40% were lower-end prepaid users.

China Unicom's market share in China's cellular market went up to 26.3% by the end of the first half, from 22.7% by the end of 2000.

The company spent 39%, or 14.3 billion yuan of its 36.3 billion yuan capital expenditure slated for the full year. It had cash of 52.8 billion yuan by the end of June, slightly higher than 52.6 billion yuan as of the end of December. Total debt amounted to 40.8 billion yuan, up from 35.7 billion yuan year end last year.
