The report said there were three hijackers on that plane. The passengers voted to try and stop them.

My impression was that the hijackers all were occupied in the cockpit when the vote took place. I imagine the three volunteers had an edge over other passengers re balls, physical condition and/or possibly some prior exposure to police or military tactics.
