Bin Laden under house arrest: report
Afghanistan's ruling Taliban militia had placed alleged terrorist mastermind Osama bin Laden under house arrest in the wake of the suicide attacks on the United States, an Arabic online newspaper reported.

Quoting "fundamentalist Arab sources", Ilaf said the "Taliban have arrested Osama bin Laden before placing him under surveillance with several of his assistants," including the head of the Egyptian branch of Al-Jihad Ayman Al-Zawahri and bin Laden's military commander, Muhammad Atef Al-Makni.

"A number of Afghan fighters are under house arrest along with bin Laden," said the report late Wednesday.

But a diplomat at the Taliban's embassy in Abu Dhabi said he could not confirm the report.

"All we know is that he (bin Laden) is somewhere in Afghanistan, but we are not aware if he is under house arrest," the diplomat said.

Bin Laden and commander Atef have been indicted for the 1998 bombings of the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania.

Bin Laden has emerged as the prime suspects in yesterday's kamikaze hijacked passenger jet strikes on New York and Washington.

>Huh? Let me get this right. The northern alliance leader is killed and they become local boy scouts.

It is obvious you never heard of the Northern Alliance and you think that Massoud is a Middle Eastern dip or something. Read up on Massoud, this guy singlehandedly kicked the Soviets out of Afghanistan, of course all the millions in CIA aid came in handy too.

>However the taliban and bin Laden are a force that can not be defeated.

Get a World Atlas out there and study it. First find Afganistan, then look at its mountains and desert, then look at its climate, then look at how many buildings are left standing (get some photos of their cosmopolitan cities out) and THINK about what it will take to "defeat" them. Maybe they really want to provoke that, considered that?

>LMAO. you are living in your own dream world. If the U.S. sets out to get bin laden they will get him.

I hope so. Maybe now we'll get him after looking for him for years (kind of late, don't you think?) And I told you his punishment (hanging by the balls and stoning, I ll be there to throw it too). But get off your fantasy Rambo world dude and study some geography and some history and look at the MAPS and then try to THINK about what it will take to "get" him. Report back with your thoughts after you complet the assignment.

The dimwit (Pahpadoupolos or whatever) stumbled into the truth with that assesment of the Afghans.

They are tough guerillas and have succesfully fought the Soviets and even more brutal civil conflicts for 20 years.

Hitting them with conventional weapons would be like sending them to bed without supper... Sending in ground troops would be very dicey.

A conventional nuclear strike on the other hand, though brutal, would drop the chances of any country providing support to these groups to virtually zero.

The Taliban may have realized that their only chance of averting something like this is to turn over Bin Laden... thus the house arrest (hope it's true).
