(NYSE:WMT - news), the world's largest retailer, said on Tuesday it will no longer accept debit cards on the Interlink network after the company more than doubled the fees it charges retailers. ADVERTISEMENT Beginning Oct. 13, Wal-Mart said it will no longer accept debit cards serviced by Interlink, a unit of Visa International, because fees were raised 125 percent, to 45 cents per transaction from 20 cents. Most Interlink customers are on the U.S. West Coast, a Wal-Mart spokesman said. Wal-Mart opted to sever its ties with Interlink because it would have to pass the increased fees along to its customers in the form of higher prices, the spokesman said. ``This is an outrageous action by Interlink and Visa,'' Mike Cook, assistant treasurer for Wal-Mart, said in a statement. Visa officials could not immediately be reached for comment. The action will not affect credit card transactions, the company said. Fewer than one-tenth of the 350 million debit-card transactions Wal-Mart processes each year are handled by the Interlink network, Wal-Mart said. The retail giant said Visa offered it a $32 million incentive to accept the higher fees, which it turned down. Wal-Mart will continue to accept other debit cards such as Star, Pulse, NYCE and AFFN. Shares of Wal-Mart, which has annual sales of $191 billion, rose 40 cents, or 0.8 percent, to $48.45 on the New York Stock Exchange on Tuesday. biz.yahoo.com
