I'll never ever forget a chilling portrait of the Taliban I read in the New Yorker about a year ago. Maybe longer. People are not allowed to beg for food--but they have to to live. One guy's leg was amputated as punishment. He had to go on begging, he said, 'So take the other leg! What can I do? I have to eat!' A woman who'd been an educated schoolteacher had been dragged so low she was forced to be a prostitute. They are very against women. Yet they are much admired & even worshipped as in some ways they brought order & peace to the region.
