Joe,

The example you gave has lines of responsibility that are fairly clear-cut and unambiguous, so there is little argument from me about responsibility and accountability in that example in terms of the people you describe as being accomplices to the crime. But what you've written before is far more encompassing in terms of who is to be considered an accomplice, and therefore who is to be punished, and for these acts: To wit - take the Watergate scandal in the 70's as an example. Many people contributed money to the Republican party in the 1974 presidential race, because they believed in the party's agenda and ideals. Some of that money was used to pay for the operations and defense of the Watergate burglars, who were engaged in and successfully prosecuted for illegal actions that undermined the very foundation of American principles and ideals. Should everyone who contributed money to the Republican party be indicted and prosecuted as accomplices to those crimes? Your logic, stated in terms that anyone who contributed financially to any organization involved in these attacks should be held accountable for those attacks, indicates that the answer is 'yes', which I find unjust. Admittedly, the Republican party did not state that one of its purposes was to commit acts which were illegal under US law. But it did implicitly state that its purpose was to do its utmost to defeat Democratic candidates. Are contributors accountable for the means used to accomplish these ends?

Regards,

Jamok
