Gordon, if everyone is allowed a gun on board I will stop flying. El Al has a better solution (the Israelian Airline ) they have at least one armed sheriff on board at all times and their check-in and boarding procedure is extremely tight. Armed planed clothes agents around the counter area as well as hand search of _every_ piece of luggage (carry on and checked). That would have deterred the 4 highjackings... but then, what happens is that the terrorists will switch preys... they `ll go after stadium, water supplies, other targets ... Your airplane tickets would also be a lot more expensive and making connections between flts would be alot more difficult. It is a choice we had made and thought was the right one. I was always a bit sceptical of the airport security standards ( i worked 3 years as an flight attendant 13 years ago) and now my fears were confirmed. It is a war and it will not be won by lobbing a few cruise missiles and smart bombs over. Things may very well get worst before they get better in my opinion for a number of reasons:

1. these guys are patient , they wait for their best opportunity, even if it takes years
2. they have nothing to lose, fear not of commiting suicide. Death is better than life to them.
3. bombing does not fix the root cause that created the environment for such hate to develop into attacks on the US and other western countries.
4. it is a war and set backs can be expected on both sides
5. i could go on ...

My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their family in these very trying and sad moments.

Gord, <<where everyone has a gun>> A number of years ago when Cuba hijacking was common, a comedy TV program "All in the Family" had the answer. Archie Bunker the program idiot bigot said "give every passenger a rod" when they get on the plane. While so ridiculously outrageous, it seems that "solution" would have been helpful recently? I live in an enlightened county of New York State where people can have concealed carry pistol permits. A number of us that can carry do carry, we exercise our 2nd amendment rights every day. Isn't freedom of movement also a right? Wake up America, you are giving it away.
