These individuals have demonstrated they have the means, methods, and motivation to do us in piecemeal. I note several more major building have collapsed in lower Manhatten. Why people insist on resurrecting the ghost of Vietnam is beyond me. The "causus belli" here is orders of magnitude greater than the Gulf of Tonkin, falling dominoes/containment policies, or even the invasion of Kuwait. My God, perhaps 10,000 to 20,000 dead Americans with be pulled from the rubble on the street of Manhatten. And this is merely a "crime" to be solved somehow by some mythical "police" entity in a plush air conditioned court room in Geneva? The perpetrators of of this "crime" see themselves as SOLDIERS in a "spiritual" WAR, and they use MARTIAL tactics to acheive their ends. Is it really relevant that they do not wear western style uniforms? If these guys wanted to have a lively theological debate, fine. But they don't, they want to come to "my house" and kill me, my family, and destroy every thing I hold dear. And for wanting my government to do everything in it's power to protect me and mine I am painted as some cowardly brain dead flag waving "Patriot." Excuuuuuuuuuuuse me, but the foremost responsibilty of our goverment is to ensure "Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Hapiness." Surely, those "rights" are currently under severe assualt. Having lived, loved and partied hearty in NYC and yes in the WTC, I'm takin' this kinda personal like. Let me be clear. The B52 is merely one weapon to be used in this war. I thoroughly understand that one B52 raid of 2 or 3 planes dropping bombs in the Afghan wastelands won't accomplish much. Advocating that kind of war is sheer lunacy and counterproductive in the extreme. But my friends who wish to bring up Vietnam must surely know that infantry or "police forces" did not bring the NVA to the peace table - the B52 did. Frankly, the only solution I can see to the problem we face with these individuals and those who give them aid and comfort is complete and unrestricted warfare, with no respect to sovereign borders. There can be no Cambodia's, no Ho Chi Minh trails, no safe havens of any kind, no matter how long it takes. The alternative is to cower in the dark while you are slowly robbed of everything you love. To me, it is very strange that people fear reprisals to strong military action (overt and covert). Don't people understand it's going to happen anyway? And again, and again, and again, until it is stopped. What's next? The Sears Tower? The Houston Astrodome? LAX? The Golden Gate Bridge? We ain't fighting in rice paddies any more. People should read bin Laden's latest fatwah to know the pernicious and deadly philosophy we are up against. These clowns will not rest - ever - until our civilization is destroyed. A far cry from General Giap.
