I find it border line insane to recall how upset this thread was when the Taliban decided on their own sovereign soil to knock down a Buddha statue. Wasn't just outrage against the destruction of the statues ...an outrage against these primitives denying International efforts to have those statues removed from their offended eyes and from "their sovereign soil " as you put it.
