If it were not for the drive of religion, it would have been much harder to get the masses to commit to the wars that leaders have advocated. Without these unifying wars, society would be much more fragmented. With society much more fragmented, technological progress would be much slower. We would, in fact, probably have never progressed beyond the technological level of the tribal societies of Africa in the 1900s.
