there's a message I deleted a dozen of entries back, because I felt it's too asinine to let go. But now I dare to come out with it again (copying the inteded meaning):

either there was no need/resources to cover up the traces. Or there's an additional level of planning involved - in the sense "their noses are sort of stumped, make sure there's enough scent left to lead them the right way".
