Ideology vs. Personality
To presume that the United States is looking to "go after" Bin Laden or any specific personality is to misunderstand the fundamental change that yesterday's tragic events have triggered. America does not go to war over personalities. It goes to war against ideologies. World War II was not a war against Hitler, it was a war against fascist ideology. The Cold War was not a war against Stalin or his successors, it was a war against communist ideology. What we are now witnessing is the beginning of America's resolve to wage war against terrorist ideology. This is a fundamental shift and its ramifications extend far beyond anything those immediately responsible for yesterday's acts can fathom. Like fascism and communism before it, terrorist ideology now faces sure and certain utter destruction. The personalities involved are of distinctly secondary importance.

The United States held no ill-will against Germany or Japan, their people or their cultures. Indeed, we took great pains to help rebuild them after their destruction. The same was true in the cold war with regard to Russia. Indeed, in the current war against terrorism I fully expect Russia to regain its rightful place in the community of nations by joining with the United States as it continues to find its way out of its long communist nightmare. The same will be true of any states unwise enough to chose the wrong side of this new war. When this war is over we will once again provide whatever assistance is required to help bring these prodigal sons home.

But as of yesterday the ideology of terrorism has no future. However long it takes, it too will be consigned, in President Reagan's memorable phrase, to the "ash heap of history".

The point of this is that the attack was not just a one time single event, it was designed to cause us long term problems. It is up to us to not allow these long term problems to persist and conquer us. Do not sell your holdings on Monday and take the cash to the bank. Do not allow panic to prevail.

Absolutely correct. While we must deal with the problems caused by the terror and carefully craft an appropriate response, it's people like you, me, and the rest of us who are the real targets of the terror. We must keep cool. If we do not panic and stay calm and deliberate, we will defeat their purpose. We should attend to our daily duties as if nothing has happened and not change a detail of our daily lives in response to these barbaric acts. It's the only thing that the man-in-the street can do to defeat the scum.

I'm doing nothing different than I did before and I hope no one else does.

Good luck to you and your sons.
