America does not go to war over personalities. It goes to war against ideologies. World War II was not a war against Hitler, it was a war against fascist ideology. The Cold War was not a war against Stalin or his successors, it was a war against communist ideology. What we are now witnessing is the beginning of America's resolve to wage war against terrorist ideology. This is a fundamental shift and its ramifications extend far beyond anything those immediately responsible for yesterday's acts can fathom. Like fascism and communism before it, terrorist ideology now faces sure and certain utter destruction. The personalities involved are of distinctly secondary importance. The United States held no ill-will against Germany or Japan, their people or their cultures. Indeed, we took great pains to help rebuild them after their destruction. The same was true in the cold war with regard to Russia. Indeed, in the current war against terrorism I fully expect Russia to regain its rightful place in the community of nations by joining with the United States as it continues to find its way out of its long communist nightmare. The same will be true of any states unwise enough to chose the wrong side of this new war. When this war is over we will once again provide whatever assistance is required to help bring these prodigal sons home. But as of yesterday the ideology of terrorism has no future. However long it takes, it too will be consigned, in President Reagan's memorable phrase, to the "ash heap of history". Message 16342260
