>>I just listened to Bush's speech - it was loaded with "um", "y'know" and confused pauses<<

Well, many think he's not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but I'm confident, and those who surround him will provide great assistance in making the right decisions...

The measure of the man is not how he says what he says, but what he says and what he does...

Now that was an offensive post. I don't care what kind of an expert you think you are ... you are offensive. I don't say this as an American but a person born in India who makes Canada her home. Americans should be embarrassed of you.

We've had our fill of your bitching about Christianity ... but now you attack your President in a time where the country should be united. We don't see your president as being weak. We see people like you as being weak.

You owe the president and the American people an apology. Must be nice to live in a country where you can spew such crap against your own country and the people that defend it and get away with it.

Lola:)

Don't confuse eloquence with inteligence. I only need to think of myself when it comes to public speaking.

Oddly, I just watched the same and came to the complete opposite conclusion-just a feeling really-and I'm not particularly political. I think Bush will do just fine.

Bush has never been a good speaker. This goes way back. IMO, his demeanor has been fairly static since the election. I know a lot of people who can't speak for shit, but this isn't necessarily indicative of fear or lack of intelligence. I think most Americans have full confidence in Bush and the Administration right now. This is not a time for Americans to fragment.

sometimes the way one delivers the message has nothing to do with how strong the action might be ...

you are not telling me anyone who don't deliver a speech that brings down the whole house is not a capable leader ...

if so, then I have to conclude most foreigners and people who don't speak well are just dumb shit ...

True. Bush isn't the brightest light in the harbor.

And his speech certainly was very poor. We don't
have a Churchill here - or a Reagan. I know most
people have learned this by now.

But he's got good advisors, and he's smart enough
to listen to them. Government is a social thing, not
just one man. I think we've got enough group leadership
to get the job done. So we need to support him and
the leadership. We'll muddle through, one way
or another. A military offensive will be led by the
military, all Bush has to do is say "go".

I am not a crackpot, I have tried hard to like and respect the man, but he still scares me to death. I believe he is intellectually incapable of holding the office and is being well managed by his father and others.

I am a psychologist and anthropologist by training

That post is offensive. And just by making that statement makes me think you are crack pop.

Remember when Bush SR. was labled a whimp?
He only went on to rally the world against IRAQ and destroy the 4th largest standing army in 100 hours.

YOU have no idea about smart or dumb the man is.
He won the election. So he must be to stupid.

Paula: After years of reading posts by many (but not all) of the well educated on SI (Doctors, Dentist, Lawyers, PhD's), I have come to the conclusion the world is full of educated idiots...

Find yourself a good con man. I am sure his delivery will be more to your liking!

"I am a psychologist and anthropologist by training" then why are you a wholesale jeweler? Bush may not be the most articulate person, but public speaking and intelligence have nothing to do with each other.

<<I am a psychologist>>

Interesting that you have to justify your position by invoking your training. Some of the most incapable people I know have advanced degrees in psychology and psychiatry. Like so many of them, you are convinced that your left leaning viewpoints are correct and that you are superior to others. You go by the "book", without an original thought of your own, so your speech is probably filled with glib euphemisms, much like the previous occupant of the oval office. A perjurer who can shed a tear at will, but who has no genuine concern for his fellow human beings.

Our president, George W Bush is, fortunately for us, cut from an entirely different cloth. He is a real man, truly respectful and caring of other men and woman. He is a man of great intelligence and resolve. His values are more characteristic of his father’s (WWII) generation, something of which our country needs considerably more.

His biggest flaw, which costs him so dearly in our culture which seems so centered on appearances and speech delivery, is his inability to invoke the charisma of a Reagan or even (yes) a Clinton. So what if we don’t have an "actor" in the White House who can’t always deliver his "lines" without the occasional pause to choose the right words, or the occasional hmmm, or uh.

I’ll take GW, a genuine American leader who has the best interests of our nation and her citizens at heart over a philandering, glib, lying, convicted perjurer, or a wooden hollow shell (the inventor of the Internet) anytime.

Paula,

Had you ever watched Gary Cooper in High Noon? He stammered and sorta stuttered when trying to rouse the town against the desperados who were about to descend on it and him. Yet, he shot them all down one after another while suffering a really bad disadvantage. We all applauded has strength and character as he under played his usual roles.

Women normally are more adroit at quickly parsing sentences together as they speak as fast as they think and the words pour out. Most men are at a disadvantage as I sometimes learn when my wife takes 20 minutes to tell me about myself. And I slink away vanquished wishing that we could argue on Email.

With men at war and in serious contests I have noticed since WWII that a man who is slow in words, lacking verbosity, can be a very dangerous adversary at times. Still water runs deep and an empty can makes the most noise. No one can ever accuse George of being a cave of winds.

He's only been on board 8 months. Let's give him the benefit of the doubt and presume, in spite of your expert opinion, that he's not on tranquillizers and is just another slow speaking guy from Texas. I know by training you hate cliches and I've said a few. But now the chips are down and I'm betting on Texas. At least he's doing a lot better than Calvin who spoke one sentence and went home.

You say "ignoring the truth" like you know something that the world has yet to learn. I think you're nitpicking because you like smooth cool guys.

Angler

I've been impressed with what I've heard from Colin Powell so far in this crisis. Bush's greatest skill is in selecting the people to work for him and letting them get on with and seeking their opinion IMO. I wouldn't have voted for him if I was an American (I'm a British and Australian citizen, I've also lived in the US 5 years and Israel 5 years) and have been worried by some of his moves over the last few months but actually I get less worried about him as time goes on.
