Understood.

This will expand the conflict and increase the risk/cost.

I believe (perhaps, I should say... "I hope" instead) that if we hit the leaders regardless where we find them, decisively and relentlessly, the support of the masses, largely ignorant, will quickly fade.

I make reference to the people of Nicaragua, El Salvador and many other countries, where the instigators of communism were intellectuals that they viewed the US as the enemy. These intellectuals were successful to get their support because the oppression of those governments, (unfortunately aided by the U.S.)

In time, once the tyrants were removed such support quickly faded. Communists were voted out by the people and today, far more democratic government and rulers are in power.

If we succeed in destroying the leaders and show their people that a better way can be built, we may avert a larger destruction. I understand many are fanatics, however once the directive of said leaders is removed, their fanatism will fade. Not easy, but worth a try
