Steel and coatings in a building such as the trade center is rated fireproof for 4 hours. The temperature, however, is expected to be that of burning furniture and paper which is maybe 1000 degrees F. Burning jet fuel could easily reach a temperature twice that and therefore weaken the steel much sooner. This was mentioned on TV by an architect from the firm that designed the WTC.
