Baseball hats, gang colors- etc- not allowed in our district, free speech or no. It may be protected speech but no one has a RIGHT to speak however they want at school. For example we cannot declaim our religion in the classroom as teachers, nor can we allow students to do that. Similarly we cannot declaim racial hatred in the classroom. I do not believe there is any precedent for that kind of symbolic speech being protected in the classroom. I remember some cases about religious clothing on students- but teachers are in a very different position, as authority figures, and as such are treated differently. It might be interesting if you wanted to look the cases up- I know there are some on clothing/speech in school. They mostly address student clothing though. Still, it would be interesting.
