The asbestos containing fireproofing was removed at great cost over many years during the 80's and was replaced with mineral fiber and gypsum based materials

The EPA is probably going to declare both the WTC and the Pentagon as SuperFund sites due to the asbestos. That means special funding to clean the sites up.

I've worked on asbestosis cases. The people doing the cleanup really need to wear respirators - asbestosis is a bad disease, with no cure. So is silicosis, which you get from rock dust and concrete dust. Those cleanup guys may be in a world of hurt without even knowing it yet.
