Beg to differ. For those who have a strong need (like terrorists), crypto and stego have been available for a long, long time. This is spite of governmental attempts to regulate it for the common folk (remind you of gun control? guns for the criminals, but not for the law-abiders).

That's just the first 3 hits from google.com . Unix had encrypted email built in since maybe 1980 or so.

That's not to say that's how they did it, only that it wouldn't be hard.
