Harry, the US is currently importing about 9 million barrels of oil a day, see eia.doe.gov for example. Estimates of ANWR reserves are on the order of 10 billion barrels, see anwr.org or subscript.bna.com for example. So, it's maybe three years worth of US imports or so. After 10 years or so to bring it into production. ANWR isn't a long term solution, and it's not a short term solution either. It's something, but it's not that much.

For what it's worth, I like nuclear myself, it's the cleanest alternative available. But there are no new US reactors even in the planning stage at this point, much less under construction. And I don't think it likely that anybody is going to assume the risk of restarting the US nuclear industry in a deregulated environment.

Re: I think we need to do whatever it takes to get off our addiction to foreign oil.

The initial step can be to seize the oil fields of the middle east, and split their ownership among NATO and the Russians.

It was the right thing to do, the decent thing to do, when the advanced western nations turned over their oil production technology to people who happened to occupy those regions at the time. But had no clue regarding what lay beneath their feet.

It hasn't worked out.

It's time to exercise just a little bit of that imperialism we keep being accused of.
