The following post (borrowed from Raging Bull) may explain the two largest Islamic factions...

Much internal tension/struggle within Middle Eastern Islamic states can find their origins of legitimacy here. Basically, Sunni's do not believe Shiites are legitimate and Shiites do not believe Sunni's are, so you have huge factional infighting within Islamic groups and countries.

Note the reference in the Sunni link to Sharia. The Sharia law or school of thought is used in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Pakistan, Afghanistan (Taliban only, not the opposition who happen to be Shiite, hence the internal war (it's all about religion)) and the more hard-line states by the ruling Sunni's when deciding law.

Iran (The infamous Mr. Khomeini) group are Shiite, hence the Iranian hatred of the ruling family in Saudi and Kuwait. There are approximatly 120 different tribes in Saudi Arabia. The ruling family is Sunni, and the rest are a combination of Sunni or Shiite. Another reason there is so much internal strife in Saudi Arabia, the Shiites are persecuted heavily.

On and on and on it goes. In a nut shell the Sunni's have a big problem with their Shiite cousins from the time of Mohammad. They do not like each other, and the both of them hate us.

The playing field is very complex over there, alliances are shrouded in history and religion. Power, control, and their perception of reality is not easy to describe or predict. Hence the lack of good intel, so much confusion. The only way I can describe it is FUBAR. How does one deal with these people??? We don't. They think differently than we do. They react differently than we do. Might as well be from different planets. I say again, Islam is a cult.

Nothing less then total annihilation of the West is their end game.

We in the West had better get a grip on the Islamic perspective of the world. While living in the Middle East I heard so many times, "We are your brothers, Islam is a faith of peace and love". Bul*Cra*, lying MotherF*ckers.

Although I don't think the author is giving Bush enough of a chance, I do feel it is a VERY thought provoking article.
