Both kinds require a decision and followthrough. In considering a defense for hard choices under the duress of war where split seconds define survival, the peacetime rules must be adjusted accordingly. Morality is an aim, but when the Face of Death is grinning at you, the biological instinct to survive takes precedent, and none should have to excuse themselves for that. If someone instinctively felt that it was not enough to take down Osama Bin Ladin but that he should be buried in a coffin lined with pork, to block his entry into heaven, I think I could understand that. On the other hand, I could never condone a soldier raping anyone, ever. No-one should be deluded. Bin Ladin was thinking of his next three chess moves months before we were put in the game. We have a protracted struggle ahead. We will not win because we beat our chests in outrage and pound the drums of war to shout our arrival. And we risk losing if we do not respect the mainstream religion that most Muslims practice while attacking the extremists who practice genocide and preach a false version. Just as Jim Jones in Guyana never represented the Christianity that most practice, Bin Ladin does not represent the loving adherents of most of the Islamic world. Do not pour kerosene on fire and give Bin Ladin the holy war he calculates for: we fight for peace and justice and civil behavior, not against a religion. We fight for our neighbors.... next door.... in NY.... and throughout the world. And remember...we will win because of the courage and sacrifices of soldiers, because of the heroic risks of people under fire, and because of those who are not talking, but listening.... and thinking.... and plotting 4 moves ahead. People taking on the hard responsibilities like Theresa's Dad had to do and did.
