If there is something to be learned from this horror, it might be that the ends people seek all too often do not justify the means used to achieve their objectives. We have been attacked by a small group of people with insane hatred and a capacity for reckless violence on a scale rarely if ever seen before. Nothing can justify what happened in New York. The United States is, without question, the most powerful country in the world. How that power is used at this moment will determine the kind of world we live in -- and the kind of world our children inherit. I hope it is used decisively, but wisely, demonstrating the legitimacy of the United States as a leader of people in human values, enterprising spirit, collective wisdom and courage when challenged, and showing the rest of the world that we have the finest institutions of government as well as military strength. This must be understood as an attack on the world as we know it and the leadership role of the United States, and not just a deadly incident in New York. I hope Bush Jr. proves to be as successful as Bush Sr. in keeping most of the world united with us in a forceful, conclusive yet measured and justifiable response. If we are fighting for our freedom, human decency, and the rule of law, then we will only win if we respect freedom, human decency and the rule of law. Eradicating terrorism will take years. We are all now aware of the risks. I hope we find the courage to live by our own values and not just preach them to others.
