An appealing prospect... if you think that will actually foreclose the next generation of (conventional, biological, nuclear) attacks from the Middle East, South Asia, Philippines, Indonesia, South America, etc., etc.

Remember, Pakistan does have "the Islamic bomb" now. Do we want them developing greater "solidarity" with other totalitarian states? And, thanks to a lot of the gear shipped to Iraq under Bush the First's watch, the Iraqis are not too far away. Would already have nuclear capacity if not for the Israeli attack (roundly criticized in the US and world-wide at the time).

"Missile Shields" - however useful the technology might ultimately be in defending the Earth from Extinction Level Events caused by asteroid strikes - are of no utility against a suitcase bomb.

No nation is going to seriously consider a ballistic missile nuclear strike against us (for fear of return immolation... missile trails being easy to follow), but suitcase bombs don't leave a lot of evidence behind about the sender....

PS, do you know you odds of dying due to an asteroid strike are the same as those of dying in a car crash? (One in ten thousand). That's because, even if "the big one" only happens every couple of hundred thousand years... by killing *everyone* it tends to run the tables on the odds.
