One of best soldiers the world has seen for 2000 years was the german. Ceasar always used german troops to win his battles. I hate to say it, but without code breaking and lack of bullets on their part, it was well nigh impossible to budge them. call it national stubborness or good organization but they were tough. the equipment they had at the start of wwII was no better than our own. it has been widely figured that the reason they won so quickly was one reason, not superior armour or better guns, but better organizational deployment. In the end it was logistics that beat them.

If I had to beat any army alive today at even 10 to one odds I would deploy the Waffen SS with lots of good equipment, a secure code system that could be changed at a moments notice and a general like Rommel. don't waste a bullet on a non essential target. The ss were used by substandard generals that gave them odious orders. but as fighting units they were supreme. high moral borne of esprit de corps was the reason. they fought to the death. I will admit however that it always better to fight to the enemy's death than your own.

the problem with deploying the US soldier in the fields such as Afghanistan is that he has not the will, skill, condition or discipline to fight a wasting war. The Russians are twice the soldiers the US are and they got beat soundly in Afghanistan. Their overdesigned tanks were sitting ducks to guerilla rear attacks, and they did not change them by Chechnya and lost a bunch again. Their overloaded soldiers wallowed in the hills against the light and fast Mujhadeen and they infrequently won their encounters there. Morale was always low and got lower as the commanders deployed vulnerable units deep in territory they could not defend. The Taliban creamed the same Mujahdeen. Go figure. Are they stupid?

IF Afghanistan or Iraq would degrade to a guerilla war, the States had better do a complete retrain and rethink about committing there. A lot of their technological advantage would be a waste. So their grunt has to take the slack with bad tactics to fight Apache style. A meatgrinder if you ask me. Better to take all the cities and starve the hill tribes out.

it will not surprise me to see some russian units fighting with the americans in afghanistan. if it comes to ground troops in afghanistan, the russians have lots of experience there.
