bin Laden's ire aginst the US started when we moved into Saudi Arabia during the Gulf war. He believes Saudi Arabia is a very holy place and US people should not be allowed to be there. I believe we still have US officials in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.

btw he has 54 sisters and brothers, most of them step sisters and step brothers. His father was a favored contrtactor for the Saud royal family for many yrs and was worht $4 or $5 billion US.

One of his relatives owns several luxury condos in Boston. A brother set up scholarships at Harvard U. Most or all of his relatives do not share his extreme views.

I would like to know, for starters...

Complete knowledge of all short positions in insurance stocks. Specifically, Lloyds and Allianz. While we receive our information about short interest q monthly, I assure you that this information can be ascertained (with effort) in a much more timely fashion. That is the information we would need. These accounts would need to be examined for trading patterns. Have they correctly been long oil during certain politicaly driven rallies? Does their short position in insurance stocks seem unusualy well timed? After the short was covered, was the account kept open, or was it closed? If closed, where did the funds go?

New OI in gold. Who accounted for new OI long gold? All accounts would need to be known. The world gold market is not big, the question is weeding out the noise from the many, many trades. Would the position be taken early (as in weeks ago) or late, and in the morning of (in HK trading for ex). Did one account simultaneously short usd, and go long oil and gold? The odds begin to decrease that that is from chance alone.

We suspect terrorism is motivated by religious zeal, and this is certainly true for those who committ suicide. No political or religious group has claimed responsibility, and there are no demands or threats preceeding or following. The timing of the attack did not correspond with any religious holiday or with any recent affront, the timing of the attack came after the markets had suffered some of their biggest weekly declines this year and the s&p, DJIA, and Nikkei were testing lows - almost to the day. In fact, the precipitant for the attack may have been that the markets may have working up the nerve to successfuly bounce off these lows.

So while it seems clear that these acts of terrorism may have been perpetrated by zealots, I suspect the group orchestrating them was driven by greed. Perhaps the profit will be used for further terrorism, and this terrorism for further revenue. The group orchestrating this attack suceeded at controlling the global financial market, if only for a few days. The profit potential in the futures market from a correctly positioned trade that has 0% risk is enormous. No, it's mindboggling.

hdrjr, You are a very wise man. Sun Tze said in the Art of War: "He who understands both himself and his enemy need not fear the result of a hundred battles."

Bin Laden interview:
We believe that the worst thieves in the world today and the worst terrorists are the Americans. Nothing could stop you except perhaps retaliation in kind. We do not have to differentiate between military or civilian. As far as we are concerned, they are all targets, and this is what the fatwah says ... .

Testimony from the Embassy bombing trial:
"Fast and light forces must be used and must operate in absolute secrecy," bin Laden stated. "All effort must be directed at this enemy, kill it, fight it, destroy it, break it down, plot against it, ambush it, and God the almighty willing, until it is gone."

FBI Press releases on the Embassy bombings:
The objectives of this international terrorist conspiracy allegedly included: killing members of the American military stationed in Saudi Arabia and Somalia; killing United States nationals employed at the United States Embassies in Nairobi, Kenya, and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania; and concealing the activities of the co-conspirators by, among other things, establishing front companies, providing false identity and travel documents, engaging in coded correspondence and providing false information to the authorities in various countries.

IMO anything short of all out war on land, seas, and air, will prove fruitless. Using international police forces, high tech gear, etc etc etc have all failed. This has been going on for 30 years. All this talk about "being smart" is a delusion and will fail. To stop it, nations will have to fall, peoples conquored, and land taken. The enemy is at the gates. All half measures will fail. Those who want a magic wand solution will only lenthen trials. Time is also the enemy now, and we have no time to waste in endless self recrimination or debate about the nature of the enemy. The enemy has revealed himself. Time for coffee table discussion to end. Alas, I fear more buildings will have to fall. We still don't get that we are at war.
